Conclusion

"Title IX is a tool.
Its strength lies in the use by citizens..."
- Women's Studies Newsletter, Feminist Press, City University of New York, 1974

"We never must quit when it comes to these principles of equity and justice in America"

Title IX played a pivotal role in a social revolution by challenging society’s view of women’s roles and forcing a change in perception. Although most were not opposed to the basic intent of Title IX, which was to prohibit gender discrimination in education, intense reactions were generated due to different methods of enforcement. Forty years since its passage, Title IX continues to be a relevant tool to fight gender discrimination. Its broad language has allowed it to be applied in many areas of education, and has reformed the educational landscape of America. Title IX needs care and vigilance to preserve the principle of equity in education; rights are not offered but are hard won and can be withdrawn.
